Add Years of Quality to Your Life

Continued from yesterday

To do something about a problem, you first have to recognize it and then deeply examine it. I recognized that I had a weight problem. As I searched for ways to solve it, I learned that the problem went much deeper.

I wasn’t getting any support from friends and loved ones because I was putting up a good front. I wasn’t admitting to myself what my problem was; so of course, I wasn’t sharing my struggle with loved ones either.

When I reached out for help and support, I felt I needed to be very selective. Some people don’t want to hear about your problems. You know the advice that you should avoid negative people because they will pull you down too if you are vulnerable? Well your friends have heard it too and you may sense some backing away if you open up to them. Choose your confidantes carefully.

Finally, I’m working on a new attitude of gratitude. I have so much to be grateful for every day. Obsessing about my weight or appearance really gets in the way of giving thanks and appreciating all the good things I have in my life. At least once a day, I stop and mentally list ten things I am grateful for. Try it. It really helps put things in perspective.

If any of what I’ve written strikes a chord with you (overweight, inactive, depressed), please please start fighting back. Do whatever you have to do to turn your life around. You’ll feel younger and fitter. You may even add years of quality to your life.
